Executive Summary

One of our customers from Japan embarked to empower multiple shop owners with a sophisticated mobile and web platform designed to enhance customer engagement and retention. The core challenge was to leverage mobile channels to collect customer data and deliver personalized content (offers, coupons, news, media) based on proximity to physical retail locations (beacons).

OpenTurf developed a robust, scalable, and secure platform with the goal of transforming first-time users into loyal, lifetime customers through continuous engagement. This platform includes a hybrid mobile application for end-users (Android & iOS) and web applications for administrators and shop owners, providing comprehensive content and shop management capabilities.

The Challenge: Bridging the Digital-Physical Divide in Retail

Before the solution, the client and its partners faced several key challenges in customer engagement and operational efficiency:

Netflix, a pioneer in on-demand streaming, ventured into live programming to stay ahead in the entertainment industry. However, as Elizabeth Stone, Netflix’s CTO, explains, live streaming posed a unique set of challenges distinct from traditional on-demand content delivery. While on-demand streaming benefits from meticulous pre-encoding and storage across content delivery networks, live streaming demands real-time processing.

“When we’re streaming video on demand we get the benefit of planning ahead. That content is in its final format; the video, images, audio are in nicely packaged files, and they’ve already gone through all the production steps, the encoding steps, they’re ready to be placed on servers around the world through our content delivery network and through internet service providers. So when a member clicks play, we’re really ready for them to click play.” — Elizabeth Stone, Netflix’s CTO

For events like the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight, viewed by over 65 million subscribers in November 2024, Netflix had to encode raw camera feeds, transmit them through their CDN, and deliver them to devices worldwide — all within seconds. The stakes were high, but so were the technical hurdles. Unlike their well-optimized on-demand platform, Netflix faced uncharted territory with unpredictable traffic spikes and real-time encoding complexities. These challenges highlighted the intricacies of scaling live streaming for massive, simultaneous viewership.

The Streaming Problem:

The platform encountered latency issues, leading to buffering and degraded video quality, especially during popular live broadcasts like the Jake Paul Vs Mike Tyson fight, which attracted over 65 million viewers.

Impact on User experience & Business

Viewers experienced interruptions and delays, diminishing the quality of real-time content consumption. The performance issues risked Netflix’s reputation as a reliable streaming service, potentially affecting subscriber growth and retention.

To understand the impact of interruptions and delays during live streaming, let’s break it down in a way that’s relatable and easy to follow:

Imagine you’re watching an intense live cricket match, and it’s the final over. Every ball counts, and you’re glued to your screen. Suddenly, the video pauses to buffer, and you miss a critical moment — a six that changes the game. You will feel frustrated and upset over the quality of service. This is exactly what happens when live streaming experiences interruptions and delays. For viewers, the experience isn’t just about watching — it’s about being in the moment, feeling the excitement, and sharing it with millions of others in real time. When the stream falters, it pulls viewers out of that immersive experience, leaving them dissatisfied.

These interruptions often happen because live streaming technology has to process and deliver video content instantly. Unlike on-demand streaming, where videos are preloaded and ready, live streaming must handle video feeds, process them, and send them to millions of devices simultaneously — all in a matter of seconds. If any part of this process is delayed or overwhelmed, it results in buffering, low-quality video, or even a complete stream outage.

Such issues can lead viewers to switch to other platforms, complain about the service, or lose trust in its ability to deliver reliable live content. For a platform like Netflix or Disney Hot Star hosting high-stakes live events, even a few seconds of delay can tarnish its reputation and lead to significant viewer dissatisfaction.

How Netflix Solved Live Streaming Challenges

Netflix took a multi-faceted approach to address the interruptions and delays in live streaming. Let’s break down the technical solutions into easy-to-understand concepts:

1. Customized FreeBSD Implementation

What’s FreeBSD? Think of FreeBSD as the brain of the servers that Netflix uses to stream content. It’s like the operating system of your computer but designed specifically for managing big tasks on powerful machines.

What Netflix Did: Netflix customized this brain to better suit its needs. Imagine tweaking the engine of a car so it runs smoother and faster without overheating. Netflix made changes to how this operating system handled large amounts of data so their servers could work faster and more efficiently during live streaming.

Impact on Viewers: By making these optimizations, Netflix ensured that their servers could handle more traffic without slowing down, reducing the chances of delays and interruptions during live events.

2. Open Connect Content Delivery Network (CDN)

What’s a CDN? A Content Delivery Network is like a network of mini warehouses spread across the globe. Instead of everyone accessing a product from one big warehouse (which can cause delays), these mini warehouses store the product closer to the customer for faster delivery.

What Netflix Did: Netflix built its own CDN called Open Connect. Instead of relying on third-party services, Netflix placed their “warehouses” (servers) closer to their viewers. This means if you’re in India, the video you’re streaming is likely coming from a nearby server, not from a faraway data center in the US.

Impact on Viewers: This reduces the time it takes for video data to travel to your device, resulting in faster streaming and fewer interruptions, even during high-traffic events like live sports or concerts.

3. Adaptive Streaming Algorithms

What’s Adaptive Streaming? Imagine watching a YouTube video on a train. As the train moves, your internet connection might get weaker, and the video quality drops to prevent buffering. That’s adaptive streaming in action — it adjusts the quality of the video based on your internet speed.

What Netflix Did: Netflix used advanced algorithms that constantly monitor your internet connection while you stream. If the connection weakens, the system automatically lowers the video quality just enough to keep the stream going without interruptions. It also preloads small chunks of video (buffering) intelligently so that you don’t notice any hiccups.

Impact on Viewers: This ensures that even if your internet isn’t perfect, you can still enjoy a smooth streaming experience without frequent pauses or buffering, especially during live events.

Outcome:

Performance Achievements:

NFL Christmas Day Games: On December 25, 2024, Netflix broadcasted two NFL games, attracting nearly 65 million viewers in the U.S. The second game peaked at over 27 million viewers during Beyoncé’s halftime performance, setting new streaming records.

Technical Enhancements: Following earlier challenges, Netflix implemented infrastructure improvements to support high concurrent viewership, ensuring smoother live streaming experiences.

Impact on User Experience:

Enhanced Engagement: The successful streaming of live events, particularly the NFL games, provided viewers with seamless, real-time access to high-demand content, elevating overall satisfaction.

Positive Reception: The high-quality broadcast of live sports and entertainment, including the Beyoncé halftime show, received widespread acclaim, reinforcing Netflix’s reputation for delivering premium content.

Business Growth:

Strengthened market position as a leading streaming service, fostering subscriber loyalty and attracting new users.

Subscriber Expansion: In 2024, Netflix’s subscriber base grew significantly, reaching over 280 million, driven by live event offerings and strategic initiatives like password-sharing crackdowns.

Revenue Increase: The company reported a 15% revenue growth year-over-year in Q3 2024, reflecting the financial benefits of diversified content and enhanced streaming capabilities.

Stock Performance: Netflix’s stock surged nearly 90% in 2024, elevating its market valuation to approximately $400 billion, indicating strong investor confidence.

Netflix’s Christmas Day NFL Games Set a Streaming Record

Latency played a crucial role in Netflix’s live streaming challenges, causing delays and buffering during high-demand events. By deploying a dedicated Open Connect CDN, FreeBSD for faster server performance, and adaptive streaming algorithms, Netflix reduced latency issues and improved real-time content delivery. This enhanced the user experience boosting subscriber growth, revenue, and market share in a short time. Their successful handling of live streaming has strengthened their market position as a leading entertainment platform.

For any tech company, finding the right talent is the biggest hurdle. Around 93% of employers in UAE-based tech companies find it difficult to hire the right talent, a study commissioned by the UK-based Institution of Engineering and Technology showed. The reason behind the talent gap is the same as in tech resource-rich countries like India—the education offered by technical institutes and engineering colleges is not at par with the changing tides in technology.

“Many times, companies take a long time to find and hire the right tech talent. Moreover, founders with a minimum viable product (MVP) may want to hire a full-fledged tech team only after they have scaled significantly,” explains Kaustubh Kashyap, Co-founder and Chief Growth Officer at OpenTurf Technologies.

Bengaluru-based Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) consultech firm OpenTurf expanded to Dubai in 2020 to deliver quick technological solutions in the dearth of the right talent. Co-founded by Kaustubh and Zunder L, OpenTurf offers services, including tech consultancy and customised automation solutions, along with software modules in blockchain, Web3, 5G, and more.

From product to SaaS

Zunder and Kaustubh have been working in the tech sector for over two decades. They first met at Comviva, a Gurugram-based company, which was incorporated as Bharti Telesoft Limited in 1999. It was later acquired by Tech Mahindra. After moving on from Comviva, Zunder founded OpenTurf in 2015 as a product company. However, he felt that offering tech products were only half of the solution, and in 2019, reunited with Kaustubh to discuss the scope of consultancy services “When we were working with Comviva, we realised that although we were selling tech solutions and products to client companies, they did not know to integrate these systems,” recalls Kaustubh. In 2020, Kaustubh joined OpenTurf as the team pivoted to a SaaS consultech model and entered Dubai. 1511 people loved this story Sequoia-Backed UrbanPiper Has Set Its Sights On The Middle East

How it works

OpenTurf’s team of experts first consult clients on probable tech solutions and takes up the project to deliver as per the client’s request. The projects typically last for about six months and cost between $50,000 and $120,000. The team did not disclose the consultancy fees. One such client was a cross-border payment company (name undisclosed), which was founded in India and now has a base in Dubai. The team sought OpenTurf’s help to restructure their existing systems to scale hardware and software and integrate with local systems. “While consulting them about restructuring, we proposed introducing third-party integration with local software on their platform,” he says. OpenTurf has built the client’s third-party integrations with about 50 different companies, and Kaustubh claims that this helped the company clear its delivery backlog and improve financial performance. To find the right talent, OpenTurf taps into colleges in Tier-II cities in India and offers the necessary training after hiring. “We give them the option to either work from our Bengaluru office or work from their homes. For us, this is also beneficial in terms of cost-cutting,” Kaustubh explains.

Operating in MENA

Kaustubh, who has worked in Dubai, feels it is important for companies to have a physical presence to tap into the MENA market. “For instance, a company sitting in India may offer a solution, but there are thousands of such companies. When you are (physically) present in front of the clients, it brings in the confidence required to do business,” he reasons, highlighting that the initial set of clients reached out only because the bootstrapped company was setting up an office in Dubai. While OpenTurf did not disclose figures, it says it contributes around 10% to its global revenue. So far, the company has provided services to 30 companies in the UAE, Nigeria, Kenya, and Europe, of which five are based in the Middle East. The company claims a repeat percentage of 91%. OpenTurf competes with the likes of Tata Consultancy Services, Accenture, Deloitte, and PwC.

Future plans

Despite a slump during the pandemic, the consultancy market in the GCC is on the rise, with government initiatives such as Expo 2020, the 2022 Qatar World Cup, and Vision 2030 being the primary drivers. A report by Gartner forecasts IT spending in the MENA region to total $178 billion in 2023, growing at 3.1%. Going forward, OpenTurf will explore opportunities in Saudi Arabia because of favourable market conditions. The 70-member team also hopes to expand the customer base through channel partners or enterprises that have extensive networks across the MENA region.

Virtual Technology Office (VTO) is heralding the next stage of the revolution in the ITindustry even as this new-age technology comes with its own share of challenges.

In the ever-growing significance of digital transformation, Virtual Technology Office (VTO) is poised to become the game changer for businesses cutting across industries. A tech-office is a logical extension of the CTO and is primarily focused on the execution and implementation of projects. In other words, VTO allows enterprises to focus more on issues of strategic interest while leaving the execution to experts who have excelled in the domain of implementation.

What exactly is VTO?

VTO is an offshore technology office that acts like an extended execution arm for a CTO with shared risks and responsibilities business models. It has expert technology architects who double up as project leads, pre-built domain agnostic enterprise-grade modules and provides complete transparency in project execution. They enhance digital capabilities of the enterprises by bringing in the right set of tools and technologies. By using VTOs, enterprises eliminate physical boundaries, collaborate across borders to deliver elevated experiences to end customers. VTOs also enable core strategic teams of enterprises to better focus on rapid expansions on economical terms as they deliver need-based scale-up softwares. VTOs are especially suited for enterprises that have legacy systems but are unable to bridge the gap to digital transformation, or lack skills to execute a project or experience a paucity of time to execute plans.

Opportunities around VTO

The concept of VTOs is fast climbing the popularity ladder thanks to a host of benefits it brings to the table. From aiding enterprises with best-fit execution to helping them with relevant tech skills, VTOs help them with the timely and reliable execution of projects. By aiding C suite people with execution, VTOs aid top leadership explore new categories, devise expansion plans, and hone its core competencies. Here’re specific features that are fueling the appeal of VTOs among new-age IT ventures and initiatives:

1) Implementation Solutions: To leverage emerging opportunities, enterprises have to excel in both effective planning and efficient implementation. The new-age technologies and skilled resources are required to manage the intricacies of the digital economy. Enterprises often find it difficult to accomplish this in-house and this is precisely where the relevance of VTO comes into the picture. VTO offers expert implementation solutions based on API-driven microservices architecture for speedy execution and quick delivery of systems and platforms.

2) Managing Projects: VTOs have the superior capability to execute projects on their own with desired time efficiency and outcome effectiveness. They provide both visibility and flexibility in project execution – allowing enterprises to opt either for the build-operate transfer or build-transfer models of delivery. The turnkey nature of the project execution approach further enhances VTOs appeal.

3) Freedom to choose technology stack: VTOs offer a range of tech stack options to enterprises so that they can select the one that aligns with their requirements. Leading players in the VTOs space collaborate closely with an ecosystem of tech experts across the globe to offer the best-fit solutions to their clients. They have tech expertise to deploy and deliver projects on-premises, on cloud or in hybrid approach. Besides, VTOs are capable of doing audits of the existing tech stack and offer expert advice and guidance to enterprises on how to select the most optimum option depending on the objectives.

Challenges for VTOs

1) Integrating Planning and Execution: The foremost challenge faced by most VTOs is to establish a seamless interface to streamline the information exchange between planning and execution teams. This challenge of coordination and integration gets intensified further as the scale and complexity of projects increase. Moreover, the involvement of multiple stakeholders including representatives from suppliers, developers, and partners make the workings of VTOs ultra-complex and intricate. Good VTOs have expertise to navigate such environments to deliver on their promises.

2) IPR Issues: Although intellectual property rights (IPR) associated with the execution of projects continue to remain with the client, VTOs involvement sometimes leads to IPR issues between the enterprises and teams representing VTOs, as they deploy pre-built modules for faster project deliveries. To avert any such disputes, both enterprises and VTOs must clearly align on the IPRs at the very outset and only after reaching a mutual consensus, the next stage of planning and execution should start.

3) Governance Transparency: The issues related to transparency and privacy of the enterprises’ data pose a challenge for software work-for-hire engagements, and VTOs are not immune either. VTOs must ensure that their client’s data are used in a completely objective manner with clear transparency on the kind of data collected from clients, its purpose, its access and the management of such data after its receipt.

4) Scaling up Issues: Scaling up solutions are critical challenges that many VTOs face while executing projects of varied natures. To overcome this issue, VTOs should prefer to deploy only those tech stacks compatible with the scaling needs of enterprises and offer sufficient headroom to accommodate both vertical and horizontal growth opportunities after go-live. Good VTOs provide need-based scale-up solutions to both optimise costs and handle rapid expansions of client’s usage requirements.

Intelligent Document Processing can play a crucial role in achieving crucial results in the Data Transformation process and help the organization to remain competitive in the long run.

Intelligent document processing (IDP) is used to automate the processing of documents with the help of a specific set of business solutions that are based on deep learning technologies. Prominent among these technologies are computer vision, artificial intelligence (AI), and robotic process automation. With the help of these technologies, IDP extracts the unstructured data from a range of documents including emails, PDFs, texts, etc. and then processes and converts this data into a structured form that can be further used by different departments for decision-making purposes. The advantage of IDP lies in its ability to extract, categorize, and export data to different units for further analysis to meet their specific requirements.

Intelligent Document Processing Process and Steps

The entire process of IDP can be categorised into five different steps:

a) Pre-processing: In order to enhance the quality of the data, the IDP chooses from a range of pre-processing techniques at its disposal. Some of the significant techniques used in pre-processing step include noise reduction, de-skewing, and binarization among others.

b) Image Processing: Using the feature of computer vision, IDP first understands the structure and identifies key features contained in the document in the form of pictures, graphs, and texts. Various techniques used in this stage include intelligent character recognition (ICR) and optical character recognition (OCR). Further, IDP might also create the digital version of the document for facilitating the process of machine-reading at this stage.

c) Data Classification and Extraction: Two primary technologies used for data classification and extraction include machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP). The classification engine feature of the IDP is responsible for carrying out these processes and to accomplish this successfully, IDPs often employ extraction models that have been pre-trained for delivering desired accuracy and precision.

d) Data Validation and Integration: Validation is among the most important steps and to achieve the desired accuracy on validation, IDP relies upon lexicons and a variety of external databases. The use of these resources also ensures that the data is ready to use and delivered to the recipients in the right format. Further, the validation process involves a Human-in-the-loop framework which takes care of the problematic data. In the process of integration, data is assigned to the different workflows and Enterprise Systems of the organisation and can be accessed by users across the functional domains and departments.

Advantages of Intelligent Document Processing

1) Data Essentialism: With enhanced integration of IDP, organisations can evolve in their understanding of different document categories and finally realize “what matters the most to them”. More and more organizations are realizing today that almost 45-50% of documents produced by them are noisy and this enhanced understanding can act as valuable feedback for departments from where these documents are originating. Accordingly, important changes can be made to reduce the unproductive things that eat into the valuable time and resources of the company.

2) Anomaly Detection: IDP helps in the identification of the document category and makes it possible for setting the limits for upper control and lower control for value pairs and keys. This will facilitate the development of a new workflow that can flag the error values at the origin besides alarming the process administrators about the potential error.

3) Efficient Searching: One of the fundamental benefits of IDP is its capacity to enhance the traceability of the document. This, in turn, dramatically reduces the time spent by the organization in searching the document. Further, an organization can couple IDP with a semantic search to make the document traceability even more efficient than before. For example, you can use the command ‘Find me invoices from Customer X which has a value of more than Y’ and the system will return the results in no time; thereby taking the level of productivity to a new high.

4) Resource Savings: In an organisation, a variety of reports have been made for the consumption of different stakeholders. The only changing variable in these reports is the data with most other portions of reports remaining static in nature. To save a considerable amount of resources, an organisation can intersperse IDP with NLP to automate report production with final overseeing being done by human authority.

5) Enhanced Transparency: IDP’s integration with the document repository of the company can enhance the transparency and authenticity of the information. The integration will result in a Single Source of Truth and by offering the right information to the right people at the right time, IDP can help organisations to achieve a sustainable competitive edge over their rivals.
